Verse
I
The Bailey Brothers escaped from the Pamona Prison around 5 AM
The sheriff's hounds were on their bootheels tryin' to catch up to them.
The boys found them some cool, clear water, to help 'em hide their tracks
And they laughed and said they'd follow this creek and never be going back.
Chorus
Don't go down to Turnback Creek
The water swells in the blink of an eye
Many a man has paid the price of getting caught on the wrong side
Don't go down to Turnback Creek
You'll learn your life is not your own
Don't go down the Turnback Creek
'Cause when the water swallows, you choke on the foam.
Verse II
Hank and Doris were sleeping late that fateful spring morning
They didn't hear the Bailey boys through the thunder and the rain pouring
Hank would say the creek knew more than any man alive.
And the churning water mixed his blood as death quickly arrived
Well they say every man has his day and the devil will get his due.
Sheriff Stallings believed the hand of God would leave him the clues.
He found Doris lying where the cattails ride the breeze
Then he saw the ugly heels marks that crushed the muddy leaves.
To Chorus
Verse III
The creek was rising and the sheriff was riding and both were closing in
The banks were slick as devil's ice and as steep as mortal sin
Well the brothers screamed for the sheriff's help as the water rolled and
hissed
But he just smiled and lit his pipe and watched the current's final kiss.
To Chorus
